Bilby Oat Trial
Croker Grain in conjunction with Uncle Tobys and Barenbrug (ex-Heritage Seeds) will be trialling a new Milling Oat variety this season called Bilby. The new variety was trialled in South Australia last year and the results were promising. The breeders are saying it is better agronomically than the ageing Mitika.
From the S.A trial results in 2019 and comparing the new variety with Mitika the main and most important difference for growers was yield with the Bilby coming out on top. This year we will have 6 growers trialling the Bilby in the Riverina. They are John and Brendan Pattison, Peter Bourke, Bernie Whelan, Harvey Wallace, Garry Terlich and Peter Tyrell.
Fingers crossed the rain keeps falling and the Bilby takes a liking to our soils. The test will be in November when the header arrives in the paddock to be able to compare yields. The Bilby variety is also said to produce increased levels of beta glucan which helps to reduce blood cholesterol, this will be confirmed once the 600 tonne trial is milled at the Wahgunyah factory in 2021.
